How to make a Patu.

Writing Genre: Procedural Writing

WALT: write the instructions on how to make a patu

SC:

1. Each instruction must instruct one action.

2. Each instruction must start with a command verb. i.e. Cut out, Sand, Put, Make, Paint, Varnish…

3. Each instruction must be in sequence and understood by the reader.

4. Assess your procedural writing to Success Criteria numbers 1, 2, and 3

Remember to check your spelling, grammar and punctuation before your writing buddy assesses 1, 2 and 3  

Equipment Requirements:

Mallet

Chisel

3 types of Files

Piece of Pellet

Electric Sander

Drill

Hand Saw
Vice

Muka

Bandsaw

Harakeke (for your muka to be tied at the bottom of your patu)

Crayon

Pencil

Paper

Paint

Paintbrush

Method:

1. Cut a piece of pellet out with your hand saw.

2. Draw your outline of your design on your piece of pellet.

3. Cut your piece of pellet with the bandsaw (You will need a grown up to help you).

4. Grip your piece of pellet with the vice grip.

5. File your wood while in the vice.

6. Sand your wood down with the electric sander or a sanding paper.

7. Drill your hole

8. (Make sure that you do a karakia before you cut your harakeke) Make your muka out of the flax.

9. Half your flax.

10. Strip the flax of any orange discolouration.

11. Pull bits of flax until you get to the hard pieces.

12. Strip the green off the flax.

13. Tie your muka when your finished on the drilled hole at the bottom of your patu.

14. Design your pattern on a piece of paper.

15. Put your design on your patu.

16. Paint your design that was on your piece of paper with a paintbrush with the colours red, white and black.

17. Varnish your Patu because now your finish
